Velasquez e Papa. Un papa controverso, come spesso lo furono i papi che governarono la chiesa tra il 1500 e il 1600. L’artista, scattando una foto al quadro di Velasquez, ha deciso di dargli una rivisitazione in chiave moderna. Qui il suo volto è semplicemente abbozzato. Anche i colori non sono quelli che tipicamente vestono un Papa. Il blu è predominante negli abiti, mentre gli arredi sono pervasi da graffiti con elementi che spuntano ovunque. È una lettura che rimanda al tipo astratto del periodo futurista di Severini, dei primi del ‘900. Le sue opere hanno una personalità e uno stile inconfondibili che si ispirano alle correnti dei grandi pittori francesi della seconda metà dell’Ottocento e al Futurismo del primo Novecento. Nel caso di Giovanni c’è una fusione e un’evoluzione originale di questi due movimenti artistici, che gli permettono di creare con uno stile inconfondibile e originale e allo stesso tempo di sviluppare temi molto eterogenei.

Innocenzo X is a work from Giovanni Crisostomo’s collection.

Velasquez and Pope. A controversial pope, as the popes who governed the church between 1500 and 1600 often were. The artist, taking a photo of Velasquez’s painting, decided to give it a modern reinterpretation. Here his face is simply sketched. Even the colors are not those that typically dress a Pope. Blue is predominant in the clothing, while the furnishings are pervaded by graffiti with elements popping up everywhere. It is a reading that refers to the abstract type of Severini’s Futurist period, from the early 1900s. His works have an unmistakable personality and style which is inspired by the currents of the great French painters of the second half of the 19th century and by the Futurism of the early 20th century. In Giovanni’s case, there is a fusion and an original evolution of these two artistic movements, which allow him to create with an unmistakable and original style and at the same time to develop very heterogeneous themes.
